During your stay, a trip to the Medoc vineyards makes a great day out. If you take the river road south from St Vivien, the first major vineyard you come to is the very photogenic  Chateau La Tour De By. After a tour of the winery, you can walk to the tower from the chateau buildings, and climb the spiral stairs to admire the view over the estuary and vineyards.

Continuing south, the lovely pink Chateau Loudenne is far from the typical Medoc chateau - it was owned by the Gilbey family and has a delightful English rose garden, with a view over the Gironde.

You may want to start your tour further south and take the D2 road through the Grand Crus Classés appellations of St Estèphe, Pauillac, St Julien and Margaux - your drive will take you past Chateaux Cos Estournel (with its chinese-style roof), Lafite, Pichon Longueville Baron & Comtesse, Beychevelle, Lagrange, Talbot, Lascombes, Margaux and Palmer.

Even if you don't stop for a guided tour at one of the chateaux, the Maisons du Vin in each of the appellations are worth visiting - they are very informative, and you can buy the second wines of the famous chateaux at a fraction of the price of their big brothers.
